Paper Republic
Paper Republic was started in 2007 by Eric Abrahamsen and a community of translators living in Beijing. In its earliest form, the website was a platform for translators to share information and showcase their translation work. Over the course of several years the site slowly evolved, becoming the leading source of information about Chinese literature and publishing in English, aimed primarily at publishers, translators, and journalists. In 2009 it won a grant from the Arts Council, UK, and in both 2014 and 2016 took second place for the London Book Fair Translation Initiative Award. Paper Republic has now developed into a full-featured platform for the promotion of Chinese literature abroad. Since 2010, projects that Paper Republic has engaged in include the “Read Paper Republic” online publication project, Pathlight magazine (in cooperation with People’s Literature magazine), and the Beijing International Book Fair Literary Salons, a small literary festival that takes place around China’s most important book fair. This year, Paper Republic will continue an expanded literary program during the BIBF in August, and organize a publishing fellowship in July.
